Via Francigena Walking is a very intense walking  trip, with many miles of walking and tiring days.

A highly variable route, with easier and shorter stages, and others with decent climbs and descents.

The greatest difficulty if you do not make intermediate recovery stages is the fatigue accumulated over the days.

With this great package you will have 7 rest days to visit some special places.

The route is very well marked and it has no objective difficulties.

Bolsena, nestled on the shores of Italy’s largest volcanic lake, is a charming town rich in history and natural beauty. Its medieval center, with narrow cobbled streets and stone houses, leads to the majestic Rocca Monaldeschi fortress, offering stunning lake views.

The Basilica of Santa Cristina, famous for the Miracle of Bolsena, is a must-visit. . A blend of history, legend, and breathtaking scenery makes Bolsena a highlight of the Via Francigena.

Bolsena to Montefiascone

Your day in Bolsena, with its breathtaking lake views, is an unforgettable experience. The morning light reflecting on the water creates a serene atmosphere, the perfect start to your journey. 

From here, the trail climbs towards Montefiascone, winding through olive groves and wild scrubland. Reaching this historic town is a milestone—it marks the 100-kilometer point from Rome, bringing you closer to your final goal. 

If you prefer a shorter walk, Walking on Francigena offers assistance and comfortable transport to your next hotel, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience.

Montefiascone to Viterbo

Path of Legends

The first part of the stage will allow you to walk like the ancient Romans, on the ancient paving of the Via Cassia, which is still in excellent condition.

You will pass through a hilly route, which offers special views of Viterbo and Montefiascone.

The city of Viterbo is of Etruscan origin, and has a vast medieval historic center.
Particularly the San Pellegrino district, which is still well preserved and has almost perfectly preserved walls.

DAY 4

Viterbo to Vetralla
Distance to Cover: 18 Km
Walk Time: 4/5 hours

Walking Through Ancient Etruscan Landscapes

The journey between Viterbo and Vetralla follows an ancient Etruscan road carved into tuff rock, with towering walls over 10 meters high. This section of the Via Francigena feels like a journey through time, immersed in history and nature.

Along the way, the Fossato Callo spring offers a picturesque rest stop with its peperino stone pools. The path then winds through rolling fields and paved roads, blending rural charm with historical intrigue. Peaceful and scenic, this stage is an unforgettable part of the Via Francigena experience.

DAY 5

Vetralla to Sutri

From Woodland Trails to Ancient Wonders

The route from Vetralla to Sutri winds through peaceful forests, vast hazel groves, and towering centuries-old oaks. As the landscape changes, the path reaches Capranica, a picturesque village along the Via Francigena.

Sutri enchants visitors with its remarkable Romanesque-era Amphitheater, carved into tuff rock, and the mysterious Mitreo, an ancient sanctuary rich in history. The town’s Cathedral, crowned by its striking bell tower, is a must-see. This stage blends nature, history, and culture, making it an unforgettable part of the journey.

Sutri to Campagnano di Roma

Walk Time: 7/8 hours

From Ancient Tombs to the Cascades of Monte Gelato

Walking from Sutri, the trail winds through the fascinating Etruscan necropolis, where ancient tombs are carved into the tuff rock. The path then reaches Monterosi before leading to one of the most beautiful natural spots on the route: the Monte Gelato waterfalls. These stunning cascades, made famous by Roberto Rossellini’s 1950 film Francis, Jester of God, create a peaceful oasis surrounded by lush greenery.

From here, the journey continues into Veio Regional Park, an area rich in history and wildlife, before arriving in Campagnano, where the next adventure begins.

Campagnano di Roma to La Storta

From Ancient Sanctuaries to Hidden Waterfalls

A short walk from Campagnano leads to the Sorbo Sanctuary, standing on a rocky peak surrounded by greenery. The route crosses Parco del Sorbo to reach Formello, then continues into the vast Parco di Veio.

Etruscan excavations line the path, revealing centuries of history. A stunning natural highlight awaits at the Cascate della Mola waterfalls, where water flows over ancient rocks. The journey ends in Isola Farnese, a charming village where history and nature blend in a truly unique setting.

La Storta to Rome (Vatican City)

Walk Time: 5/6 hours

Walking the Last Miles to St. Peter’s Square

The final stage of the Via Francigena leads straight to Rome, ending in the iconic St. Peter’s Square. The route starts on urban roads before entering the peaceful Insugherata Park, where ancient Roman villas and hidden tombs lie amid lush greenery.

A climb to Monte Mario offers a spectacular first glimpse of the Eternal City. From this panoramic viewpoint, the final stretch begins. With each step, the grandeur of Rome draws closer until, at last, St. Peter’s Basilica stands before you—the perfect ending to an extraordinary journey.
