A highly variable route, with easier and shorter stages, and others with decent climbs and descents.

The route is very well marked and has no objective difficulties.

Continuing onward, we reach a town renowned for its hospitality, a place that has welcomed travelers along the Via Francigena for centuries. Here, one tradition stands above all—the art of making bread, so deeply rooted in local culture that it has earned the town its famous title, the “City of Bread.”

San Gimignano to Monteriggioni

From Towered Skylines to Walled Fortresses

Leaving San Gimignano, the path winds through the valley of the Foci stream, following the Colle Val d’Elsa variant along the river in a protected Natural Park. The route passes the Romanesque churches of Santa Maria a Coneo and San Martino di Strove, each a testament to centuries past. The stage ends in Monteriggioni, a striking hilltop village enclosed by tower-crowned medieval walls.

Monteriggioni to Siena

Into the Heart of Siena

Beyond Monteriggioni, a stretch of white gravel roads leads to Cerbaia, an abandoned medieval village where only ruins remain. The path then weaves through the Renai woods, a peaceful passage before the final approach.

Arriving at Siena, travelers pass through Porta Camollia, the historic entrance for those walking the Via Francigena. Within the city’s ancient streets, the grandeur of the Duomo and the unmistakable Piazza del Campo, where the legendary Palio is held, offer a stunning finale to the journey.
