Via FrancigenaSan Miniato to Buonconvento

Walk over 118 km in 7 days, experiencing what is often considered the most beautiful stretch of the Tuscan Via Francigena. This 8-night journey, including a stay in Colle Val d’Elsa, takes you through rolling hills, medieval towns, and the breathtaking landscapes of Val d’Orcia.

From the Hills to the Timeless Beauty of Val d’Orcia

Starting in San Miniato, you’ll pass through some of Tuscany’s most iconic locations—San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, and Siena—before entering the scenic heart of Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO-listed landscape of endless rolling hills and picturesque villages.

A Well-Connected and Accessible Route

This section of the Via Francigena is not only stunning but also one of the most convenient. San Miniato is easily reached by train, and at the end of your journey, you can depart just as effortlessly from Buonconvento’s train station.

With carefully planned accommodations, luggage transfer, and full support, this journey allows you to experience the best of Tuscany at a comfortable and enjoyable pace.

DAY 2

San Miniato to Gambassi Terme
Distance to Cover: 24 Km
Walk Time: 6/7 hours

One of the most beautiful stages is the one that starts from San Miniato.
We walk along fascinating paths.

Crossing the hills of the Val d’Elsa, you admire castles, fortresses, hospitable, abbeys, until arriving at Gambassi Terme.

This town owes its name to a series of thermal waters that have flowed in this area since ancient times.

DAY 3

Gambassi Terme to San Gimignano
Distance to Cover: 14 Km
Walk Time: 4/5 hours

This stage runs on dirt roads for almost the entire route.

It passes through hills and vineyards as far as the eye can see and leads to San Gimigniano, one of the most charming villages in all of Tuscany.

With its 15 towers, San Gimignano is surrounded by 13th-century walls.
This village appears even more fascinating when reached from the Francigena.

Via Francigena - Gambassi - San Gimignano

DAY 4

San Gimignano to Colle Val d’Elsa
Distance to Cover: 13 Km
Walk Time: 3/4 hours

Starting from San Giminiano, trails with gentle ascents and descents cross the valley of the Foci stream.

Walking along the beautiful Colle Val d’ELsa variant, you walk along the River in the protected Natural Park.

Via Francigena San Gimignano - Colle Val d'Elsa

DAY 5

Colle Val d’Elsa to Monteriggioni
Distance to Cover: 15 Km
Walk Time: 4/5 hours

A very easy, and flat stage.

Through the paths you arrive at the Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria a Coneo, and after crossing the bridge over the Elsa you arrive at the Romanesque church of San Martino di Strove.

The stage ends by arriving at the beautiful Monteriggioni, a unique town enclosed in its walls and crown of towers and located atop a hill.

Via Francigena - Step Colle Val d'Elsa to Monteriggioni

DAY 6

Monteriggioni to Siena
Distance to Cover: 21 Km
Walk Time: 5/6 hours

Just out of Monteriggioni a series of white roads lead to Cerbaia, an ancient medieval village now abandoned and then through the Renai woods.

Then you reach Siena, passing through Porta Camollia, a traditional place of access to the city for pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena.

In Siena it is definitely important to visit the Duomo or Piazza del Campo where the famous Palio takes place.

Via Francigena - Step Monteriggioni to Siena

DAY 7

Siena to Monteroni d’Arbia
Distance to Cover: 18 Km
Walk Time: 4/5 hours

Via Francigena - Step Siena to Monteroni d'Arbia

DAY 8

Monteroni d’Arbia to Buonconvento
Distance to Cover: 13 Km
Walk Time: 3/4 hours

After an initial flat stretch, climb the hills, on paths lined with beautiful cypress trees, and reach Buonconvento.

It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

I recommend visiting the corso where the clock tower is located, while on the facade of the town hall you can still see the 25 coats of arms of the as many Podestas who ruled Buonconvento until 1270.
