Via Francigena : San Miniato to Buonconvento in 9 nights with 1 overnight in Colle Val d’Elsa, and 1 additional night in Siena
Via Francigena : San Miniato to Buonconvento in 9 nights is a great and beautiful achievement!
Over 118 km in 7 days of walking!
The Val d’Orcia Francigena all in one week, from San Miniato to Buonconvento.
Perhaps the most beautiful stretch of the Tuscan Via Francigena
It manages to join the hilly part of San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and after Siena here is the entrance to Val d’Orcia.
It is also the section of the Via Francigena with the best connections.
In fact, one arrives comfortably by train at San Miniato and departs by train from Buonconvento.

A very intense Francigena walking trip, with many miles of walking in a beautiful path.
A highly variable route, with easier and shorter stages, and others with decent climbs and descents.
We always recommend a few days of rest along the way

Itinerary
San Miniato to Gambassi Terme
Distance to Cover : 24 Km
Walk Time : 6/7 hours
One of the most beautiful stages is the one that starts from San Miniato.
We walk along fascinating paths.
Crossing the hills of the Val d’Elsa, you admire castles, fortresses, hospitable, abbeys, until arriving at Gambassi Terme.
This town owes its name to a series of thermal waters that have flowed in this area since ancient times.
Gambassi Terme to San Gimignano
Distance to Cover : 14 Km
Walk Time : 4/5 hours
This stage runs on dirt roads for almost the entire route.
It passes through hills and vineyards as far as the eye can see and leads to San Gimigniano, one of the most charming villages in all of Tuscany.
With its 15 towers, San Gimignano is surrounded by 13th-century walls.
This village appears even more fascinating when reached from the Francigena.
Colle Val d’Elsa to Monteriggioni
Distance to Cover : 15 Km
Walk Time : 4/5 hours
A very easy, and flat stage
Through the paths you arrive at the Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria a Coneo,
and after crossing the bridge over the Elsa you arrive at the Romanesque church of San Martino di Strove.
The stage ends by arriving at the beautiful Monteriggioni, a unique town enclosed in its walls and crown of towers and located atop a hill.
Monteriggioni to Siena
Distance to Cover : 21 Km
Walk Time : 5/6 hours
Just out of Monteriggioni a series of white roads lead to Cerbaia, an ancient medieval village now abandoned and then through the Renai woods.
Then you reach Siena, passing through Porta Camollia, a traditional place of access to the city for pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena.
In Siena it is definitely important to visit the Duomo or Piazza del Campo where the famous Palio takes place.
Rest day in the beautiful Siena

Siena to Monteroni d’Arbia
Distance to Cover : 18 Km
Walk Time : 4/5 hours
After a short walk inside Siena, you walk the white roads of the Val d’Arbia.
Next you enter the Crete Senesi, whose name comes from the clay (creta), which is found in the soil and gives the landscape a characteristic gray-blue color.
Monteroni d’Arbia to Buonconvento
Distance to Cover : 13 Km
Walk Time : 3/4 hours
After an initial flat stretch, climb the hills, on paths lined with beautiful cypress trees, and reach Buonconvento.
It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
I recommend visiting the corso where the clock tower is located, while on the facade of the town hall you can still see the 25 coats of arms of the as many Podestas who ruled Buonconvento until 1270.
